Studies have shown that the more sunlight a baby is exposed to during the day, the better he or she will sleep at night. It seems as if daytime sunlight “reminds” a baby that day is the time to be awake, and when that sunlight goes away in the evening, it “reminds” a baby that night is the time to sleep.
Whatever the exact reason behind this baby sleep tip, it works. So try it!
Take your baby outside if it’s a sunny day with nice weather, and if it’s not, be sure that your baby has lots of inside light during the day. This also means making sure that you don’t make their nursery so light-proof that their daytime naps take place in the dark. For daytime naps, it’s best to have an area that is well-lit. This doesn’t mean that you have to get your baby to nap in bright sunlight during the day, but it does mean that you don’t want to get them in the habit of sleeping in complete darkness during the day either. You want your baby to associate darkness with night, and to associate night with sleep - lots of it.
So the next time it is sunny out, remember that sunny days make for sleepy nights when it comes to baby sleep.
