The Right Mix

Did you know that most babies prefer a specific temperature and humidity when sleeping, and will have a hard time sleeping if either isn't right?

I didn’t know this until I tried to put my daughter to sleep after turning the humidifier on in her nursery for too long (it was winter, and I didn’t want it to be too dry for her), and she wouldn’t sleep at all because it was too moist.  It wasn’t until later that I figured out that this was why she wouldn’t sleep, but sure enough, as soon as I adjusted the settings on her humidifier, she never had that trouble again.  As I learned the hard way after having a very difficult night, “the right mix” is very important.

So, you’re probably wondering what the magic numbers are for the “right mix.”  Most baby sleep experts agree that babies sleep best if their room is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 21 degrees Celsius), and at around 50% relative humidity.

So how do you make sure that you maintain these numbers?  The easiest way is to make sure that you use heaters or humidifiers that are adjustable to a certain temperature or humidity level.  (Don’t do what I did and just leave the humidifier run all day in a closed room or else it will be too moist for your baby to sleep!)  Whatever you use, just set the temperature and set the humidity - remembering to double check the accuracy whatever you are using - and you shouldn’t have any trouble with getting “the right mix” for your baby’s sleep comfort.
